Halloween started off with Pumpkin Pancakes and getting ZJ's hair up in curlers so that she could be Shirley Temple. Actually, it started off with the girls bouncing into our room just before 7 to say Happy Halloween! No enthusiasm in this house! Literally, all day long, it was "How many more hours?" As I was making the waffles, I noticed the little deer family out my kitchen window. Apparently, this mama likes our compost pile. Notice the baby in the background. There are two of them and they are the tiniest little deer I've ever seen this late in the season. Seeing the deer in the back yard is one of my favorite things!
We got everyone ready in the afternoon so that they could walk down to Nana's and make their first haul there. They could have gone without trick or treating after one stop at my mom's!
ZJ, aka Shirley Temple, tap danced her way through the house all weekend long. She's still not washed her hair because she wanted the curls at school today, but this morning, it needed to br braided because she turned frizz instead of curl. She really wants a perm!
We had dinner at Denise's, like always, then went trick or treating in her neighborhood with her grandchildren, who both under three. Denise lives in a subdivision where everyone knows everyone, the homes are close and there are literally hundreds of kids out on the streets. We've done Halloween together for most years since our bigs were little. We met a passing group of Trick or Treaters who were all in high school. They informed me that "you're never too old to stop Trick or Treating." They were good clean cut kids having good clean fun. I didn't mind that at all. It's the big kids that pull pranks that concern me!
Gracie kept track of how many pirates she saw all night and she was the only "girl pirate". She cracked us up. Her favorite part of the night was watching Kaylee, Denise's little granddaughter say "thank you" as she got her treats. Very cute.
I couldn't help but wonder about my grandchildren and what they were doing on Halloween. I've still not heard from Kelly, so I don't even know if Zaylee went out at all. I did see a cute picture of Willow as a darling little CareBear. One of these years, I'll have a normal "grandparent" situation to enjoy... that will be when Liza and Buddy decide to begin their family! I don't mention it often but I can't wait! Do NOT tell Liza I wrote that! I'm really trying hard to be the no pressure mom. Trying. Really. Trying. ;) It will come in time and when it does, oh heaven help us all! I'll be in Grammie heaven!
Quayd, who thinks he's all grown-up, begged the girls to stay home on Halloween and watch a movie. While we were sick last week. we had told them they could all have cash for candy and buy anything they wanted, then we'd have a movie night together instead. Quayd loved this idea and even though everyone was better, he thought the idea was still worth considering. When he realized that it really wasn't happening, he decided to be Sam from Transformers and spent Saturday making his "AllSpark" box which doubled as his candy container for trick or treating. Funny thing was that he ended up having the best time of all three kids.
We finished early, hit the grocery store for a few Sunday dinner items and came home in time to get a very good Saturday night's sleep! Just in time to change the clocks! I got up early and went to the church by 8, early, to set up a little display in the entryway of the Relief Society Room. I volunteered to do the display and I'm loving the opportunity. This is my "Virtuous Woman" display. The cross-stitch is all about Proverbs 31, with quotes from the scripture. I'm excited about next week's display already! I think being a window dresser would be one of the most fun jobs ever!
Yesterday, Quayd passed the sacrament for his first time. I was very emotional, watching my little guy, looking so sharp in his giant suit, so serious about doing it right. He did a great job and then, went with his dad to collect the fast offerings after church. He's so excited about being a deacon. Next Sunday, he's been asked to speak in Sacrament Meeting. When Scott called to ask him, he said, "Sure! I'd love to!" And so it begins... he's really turning into a "Young Man". In less time that the time that we've had the babes, he'll be old enough to be a missionary! Time moves too quickly!
Liza and Buddy came for dinner and we played Apples to Apples until the babes bedtime. We had a very relaxed Sabbath day. Well deserved. I can't get over how slowly we're getting our energy back. But, it's coming! It was a great weekend!
Did I mention that the time change really makes me crazy. I was up at 4:55 this morning, wide awake. At 6:30, the girls are up. So, whoever says that the fall change means an extra hour's sleep... in this house... Not so much.
This week is looking pretty tame. Maybe even the next two weeks.
- Our celebration of the adoption/sealing Family Night tonight!
- Parent Teacher Conference for Gracie
- Mom's helping manfriend, Boyd, move to Boise
- Dale turns 31. How did we get a 31 year old son!?
- My favorite niece, Brooke, will have her baby! She's now overdue! (For the record, I have nothing to do with this but to be a cheerleader, but it's really big news around here! Every morning, "Did Brooke have her baby yet?")
- GNO
- Still getting things back in order here at home
- A few Holiday projects in the works
Life really is good!
The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family.
The kids looked too cute in their costumes! :)
