...of summer, that is. Tomorrow night, we'll be having our fashion show, father's blessings and going to bed early. School begins on Thursday morning. Time for routines and homework and silence in the house. We normally have the fashion show on the family night before school begins, but this year, we had a few too many things on our plate to fit it all in, so, we'll carry it over tomorrow night. And we're excited to do it with Liza and Buddy on SKYPE.
A few signs of the end of summer:
- We began emptying the pool this afternoon. Sadness.
- Doug and ZJ picked a ton of greenbeans from Connie's garden. I'm sure that I'll get at least a dozen quarts bottled tomorrow!
- Peaches are ripening quickly! We have two yellow tomatoes and one orange one. Harvest time is near.
- The mornings are cool, the afternoons are hot, the evenings are crisp.
- My walks are getting longer again because it's not too hot!
- Hobby Lobby is filled with Christmas. (Even I, the Christmas freak, think that's too early.)
- I am making little lists for upcoming holiday happenings.
- We're wearing winter jammies already.
- Dinners usually consist of lots and lots of veggies from the garden and very few entrees.
A few things I'm going to miss about summer:
- Letting the babes sleep in as late as they want. (8:30 is the norm in the summer.)
- The sounds from the babes in the pool...it's the best mediator ever.
- NO homework.
- Sleeping in the tent-trailer with the kids.
- Napping and reading in the tent-trailer. (We've literally lived in it on the side of the house much of the summer...cool, shady, quiet and no phone.)
- Game playing.
- Movie marathons.
- Did I mention hanging out in the tent-trailer?
- Fresh fruit!
- Backyard gatherings.
A few things I won't miss about summer:
- "What's to eat?"
- Towels, towels, towels. So many towels.
- Making three meals a day.
- Popsicle wrappers and sticks.
- "I'm bored." (It doesn't get said much because I always find a job for anyone who's bored.
A few things I love about school starting:
- My house is spotless from 7-3 every day, all day long.
- It will be easier to keep the house quiet when Doug and the babes all go to bed at the same time, what with his new work schedule.
- That means I'll have the whole house to myself from 8-4, as well.
- Going to lunch with girlfriends and not feeling guilty about the sandwiches or pizza rolls that the kids are eating at home.
- I can listen to, watch or read as much as I want with no interruptions.
- Alone time for studying, preparing lessons, crafting, or just sitting and watching out the window if that's what I'm in the mood to do.
A few other rambling thoughts:
- Quayd is working on a goal. The goal is to have internet access on his Nintendo DSL. We've agreed that he doesn't need it yet and he's never been too concerned about not having it. Until now. (There's so much junk on the net, that we have been very guarded.) So, he has been working on some responsibility and behavioral goals and when he turns 14, we'll allow some restricted access on his DSL.) This morning, he asked me, "Mom, if Go-Go has a good attitude and acts responsible, can he get internet too?" I love his humor.
- My truck ran fantastic today! Imagine that!
- Denise's daughter, Ashlee, is at the hospital having her baby bot tonight!
- I miss Liza and Buddy.
- I think I may be going to bed earlier myself. Going to bed at midnight, getting up at 4 and then trying to go back to sleep at 4:45, then up at 5:55 and going back to sleep at 7, then up at 8 with ZJ may just make me crazy... or cranky... I've got to get this figured out quickly!
- The earthquake on the east coast! I'm so glad that it wasn't devastating. It's something to remember, for sure. We live in earthquake zone and have them on occasion. As long as they are not destructive, it's something to talk about for a few weeks. Now, about that hurricane... I informed Dad that if there were any chance of a hurricane in North Carolina next month, I'll be postponing my trip home!
Life is good. Happy Back to School week!
Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.
