Well, well. There's never a dull moment, is there? It was a great weekend.
Friday, I had a fun lunch date with Carol, then date night with Doug and Stott and Wendy. Carol and I sat at Chili's for about three hours just catching up after her trip to Arizona. Then, I left, went home and got ready to go back to Chili's for dinner for our datenight. No Summerfest... one of the few years ever that we didn't make it. My knee didn't co-operate. (I can honestly say that I'm excited for the surgery next week!) But, we had a fun date ~ dinner and then back to the B's to watch Water for Elephants while the kids all played outside in the yard until dark. I love summertime!
By the way, I liked Water for Elephants. Didn't love it. Wouldn't buy it. But, I was suprised at how much cleaner it was than the book! Thankfully, because I didn't even finish the book!
Saturday was spent getting the "men" or "boys", depending on who's doing the talking, ready for camp. Well, most of the day. I did take a break in the afternoon and went to the movies with Carol and Taylor.
We saw "What to expect when you're expecting." My review: Don't waste your money. I knew that I wouldn't love this movie before we went in. It was vulgar and crude in lots of places. The ending did somewhat have a little redemption...but not enough for me to like the movie. Childbirth is such a beautiful and sacred thing, in my opinion, that trashing it up with comic relief and over the top cranky swearing women never makes me laugh. Oddly, the deliveries were treated with much more respect than the pregnancies. I'll not be buying this one. I'll not be watching it again. Thanks, but no thanks. But, as always, time with Taylor and Carol is a goodtime!
Saturday evening, I was so proud of the fact that we were ready for camp! (With the exception of baking some cookies at the last minute and loading it into Doug's van.) This left me all day Sunday to focus on Doug's Fathers Day!
Sunday was a fun! We served Doug a scrambled Denver Omelette...breakfast in bed. I'd made homemade English Muffin Bread, another Pinterest recipe... A MUST make! I'll post it tomorrow! After church, we had one of Doug's favorite meals...tilapia, spinach salad, homemade rolls, mashed potatoes and another strawberry cake. (I'm tellin ya, that cake is a must make!)
Kelly came for dinner and stayed a few hours. It was the first time we've seen her since all of her drama. She looked good. She ate like a horse. She was herself...her sober straight, happy, fun-loving self. We talked and actually laughed. No apologies, of course, but it was a good time and that's what I wanted for Doug's day. We Skyped with Liza and Buddy for a bit and then Kelly left. Before leaving, she hugged me and said she'd had a good time. She said that she needed to talk with me alone, but I told her not then. There was too much other excitement for one day. She left and thanked us, asking if she can come again for her birthday. She has plans of joining Kevin and Zaylee soon in Arkansas as soon as her legal situation is taken care of. Hmmmm.
I'll spare the gorey details, but Quayd's right index finger is extremely infected. We'd doctored it several times through the day but by bedtime, it was looking dangerous...to DOUG. That's saying something. Finally, after all but wrestling him to the ground, Quayd allowed me to lance it. Doug watched the whole process and said, "Babe, that's bad." We got online and googled for some answers and everything we found said, "If this and this...See a doctor immediately." So. At 10:15, I called our doctor's after hours number, apologized for my late call and explained the problem and that Quayd was supposed to leave at 7 for scout camp. His response, "He needs to go to the ER right now." WHOA! Seriously!?!? He said, "He can not go to camp with that bad of an infection." Lovely. After discussing it, he said that he'd see first thing this morning and Doug and Quayd would head up to the Idaho Scout Camp after the pharmacy opened so that he could could get some antibiotics. And so. Quayd and Doug have just left for Scout Camp a few hours behind the rest of the guys. The finger is still pretty gross. No swimming in the lake for Quayd this week. Sadness!
Quayd was one happy camper (no pun intended). As we pulled in from the doctor, he jumped out of the truck while I was still pulling it into the garage, leaning over the back seat to kiss me goodbye. He didn't want to waste a second. Five minutes later, they pulled away and I realized that in all the excitement, I'd, for the first time ever, not taken the before camp photo. I called Doug and told him that I'd have to take an after camp picture this week. He'll be home Saturday. I love that boy! AND HIS DAD!!
Doug is doing double duty this week, helping with both Quayd's scout camp and Gracie's girl's camp. ZJ and I will be partying on our own most of the week. Details to come.
Oh, one last thing that I don't want to forget. Quayd is signed up for the birdwatching merit badge at this camp. One of the prerequisites was to be able to identify 20 birds. As we walked down to take mom a piece of cake last night, Quayd starts reciting his birds list, "Okay. There's the brown duck and the grey duck and the girl duck and the boy duck and the mother duck the gold eagle and the bald eagle and the, the, um, uh, the chicken!" Have I mentioned that I love this boy!?
It's always interesting to me that we race around crazy busy getting ready, building up for events and then WHAM! It's here. And then... Deep sigh...it hits me all over just how quickly time passes! ZJ is heartbroken that she's the only one not going to camp this week, so we'll do some fun things to make it specail, just us girls. Life is good...even with infected fingers and late starts to camp. Life is very very good.
But what minutes! Count them by sensation, and not by calendars, and each moment is a day.
