Our grandson, Jason, turned twelve on Saturday. We were thrilled to be invited to attend his ordination to become a Deacon in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! This is a rite of passage, the biggest day of a young man's life to date at age twelve! This was a double-special day because Quayd was able, as a Priest, to stand in the circle of Priesthood holders, along with Doug, Jason's dad and uncles, as Jason was ordained. It was a touching moment to watch and listen to the beautiful blessing given to Jason by his father, Dave. There were tears everywhere in the room! My favorite part was after the blessing, watching Jason hug his dad. I captured the moment and haven't even shown it to them yet, but wanted to record it here in my journal.
As most know, Jason was adopted by Dave and Katie and we adopted them all! They are an amazing family, who we can't get enough of! We have loved nothing more than watching Dave and Jason together through the years. They have a special bond that is fascinating and heartwarming to watch. At twelve, Jason can do almost anything his dad can do! They golf together and work together, hike together and serve others together. Jason has a tender heart. Everyone in their ward mentioned it. He's recognized for being there to help, whenever there is a need. He's truly an example of "willing to serve". We love him so much!
Between Sacrament Meeting and the ordination, we slipped away and over to Doug's Aunt Kay and Uncle Jim's. Kay is Doug's mom's sister and we just adore her! Jim is just a fun, fun man! The kids have not spent a lot of time with Mom's extended family. We told them about Kay and Jim and guaranteed them that they would love them! And they did! We were not there two minutes and I could see that the kids were just loving it! Jim took them for a tour of his amazing back yard while Doug and I visited in the kitchen. Kay was preparing a birthday dinner for her family and we helped a bit. We visited for almost two hours before heading back to the church and the kids first words when we walked out the door, "Next time we come to see Jason, can we come again to Aunt Kay and Uncle Jim's?" Family is the best!
After the ordination, we all went back to Jason's home for a BBQ with several members of their extended family. Through the years, we've grown to love them, as well! It was such a fun BBQ! And the food! When Dave and Katie are involved, there's not going to be anything close to a match for food! OH MY!!! Dave did burgers on the grill that were A.MAZ.ING!! No recipe was used, but I watched and even helped a bit with mixing the meat. They both had their hand in adding some zesty additions to the meat. Here's what I captured and we will definitely try to recreate the burgers at home. He mixed together:
1 pound spicy ground sausage
3 pounds ground beef
1 can chopped green chilies
a ton of shredded cheese
various seasonings
I've never thought about adding shredded cheese to the beef instead of slices on top. OH MY!!!
And Jason's requested birthday cake was Rice Krispy Treats. Katie dolled them up in two batches. Her additions made them THE best treats EVER!!! She added to the butter:
Heavy cream
Coconut Marshmallows
Toffee bits (as it cooled down)
white chocolate chips
May I just say, "OH! MY!!!! HECK!!!!!"
It was a delightful evening. We enjoyed our time together so much. After taking a few pictures, Jason walked up and handed me to beautiful flowers that just made my day. He really is a sweetheart. Jason is at Scout Camp this week... his first time being away from his parents other than a few sleepovers here and there. He was so excited. We are so thrilled to be a part of his life!
What an outstanding weekend we had! Life is good!
